What do YOU look for in a REALTOR®?

There is a particular quote that comes to mind when thinking about the real estate profession:

“If you think hiring a professional is expensive, wait ‘til you hire an amateur” - Red Adair

If you have ever watched one of the real estate shows on HGTV, you already know exactly what I’m talking about. But there is so much more to hiring a REALTOR® than just whether or not they are educationally qualified to help buy or sell your home.

Are they trustworthy?

When dealing with a large transaction such as selling or purchasing a home, trustworthiness is a major factor in who you select to assist you with this process. It is a mandate of the real estate profession to act in the best interests of your client, being the number one fiduciary duty us Agents have towards our clients, but as with any profession, there are those who act with more integrity than others.

Are they transactional, or relational?

All people look at business differently. Some people don’t see beyond the transaction and the money they will attain when all is said and done. There are others who don’t give much consideration to the dollar value per deal but rather how providing a good service can continue to benefit them throughout their career through word of mouth referrals.

Are they available when you need them?

When working with a REALTOR®, you want someone who is going to answer their phone and be available to you when you need them, not someone who leaves you hanging when you have a question.

Are they the right fit for you?

Needless to say there are some personality types that clash with one another. When looking for a REALTOR® to represent your interests, it’s important that you get a good feeling from that person and that your personalities are compatible. Some people want an Agent who’s more aggressive, whereas some want an Agent who’s more compassionate and understanding of their needs.

When looking for a REALTOR® to represent your interests in the purchase or sale of a home, it’s best to sit down with them for a coffee and get a feel for the person they are and the services they provide prior to signing any paperwork. Buying or selling a house is a major life decision and you should look back on the experience favourably instead of with regret. Having the right person in your corner will help alleviate any stress and will help make the home buying / selling experience a memorable one.
